When I was younger, I used to wonder how it feels to adopt a baby. How much love in your heart you need to have to love someone who is not ‘yours’. How special are those people capable of such love, and how blessed are the kids receiving it. As I grew older, and became a mother myself, it confused me even more. The love between a child and mother grows as the baby grows in the womb. The baby recognises the mother’s voice, body and scent, and that is how they start bonding. It comes naturally. How does it work with adopted babies? I understand that as a parent, you will love your child, no matter how it came in your life. But what does it take for the child to open it’s heart and welcome strangers to be her parents? I asked a few people who have adopted to share when was the moment they knew that the child had accepted them, and I am sharing their stories here.
