In a perfect world Hugh Grant would love to be wrapped up in wedded bliss, but if that isn’t realistic the actor would prefer to keep his options open rather than commit to a marriage.
Speaking to Howard Stern, the 55-year-old actor stated he “likes” the fact his Florence Foster Jenkins character has a mistress.
“I always admire the French and the Italians who are very devoted to their marriages,” the father of four explained. “They take them extremely seriously, but it is understood that there might be other visitors at 5 o’clock in the afternoon. You just never boast about. They never say anything, but that’s what keeps marriages together.”
Hugh Grant went on to share that he feels marriage is “unromantic,” and he doesn’t believe humans are meant to be monogamous for life.
“I can see the lovely aspect if you marry exactly the right person – your best friend and it’s cozy and it’s lovely. But, people make so many mistakes,” the man who was infamously caught with prostitute Divine Brown in 1995 said.
“Do I think human beings are meant to be in 40-year-long monogamous, faithful, relationships? No, No, No. Whoever said they were? Only the bible or something. No one ever said that was a good idea. I think there’s something unromantic about marriage. You’re closing yourself off.”
In recent years Hugh has done anything but close himself off, at least when it comes to expanding his brood. In 2011 he became a first-time father, welcoming a daughter with Tinglan Hong. The following year he had a son with Swedish television producer Anna Eberstein. In 2013 Tinglan gave birth to his third child, and in 2015 he and Anna welcomed his fourth.
Although it’s unusual to have children with alternating women, I can’t quite bring myself to say it’s “bad” if all parties knew what was going on. I’m into the idea of adults creating their relationships in a way that suits them, without being bound by tradition — but that isn’t exactly what Hugh is talking about here, is it?
As open minded as I tend to be, I do not share the same respect for those who have unspoken “other visitors” come by. Not even a little bit.
Marriage as I know it is rather unromantic. It’s hard work and dedication, and continually choosing to close yourself off rather than betray your spouse. If that’s not your thing, then I believe the absolute least a partner needs to do is be clear about their feelings and intentions to be with another. None of this hush-hush affair on the side stuff.
I will give Hugh one thing, however — he knows marriage isn’t for him.
