Being a mother and grandmother are two of my greatest accomplishments. The love and joy that I receive from my children and grandchildren is irreplaceable. I would give everything to make sure that they are healthy and safe. The reality is that today, more children are being raised by their grandparents because their parents are absent. This occurrence can be contributed to several problems within the family unit such as substance abuse, neglect, imprisonment, mental health issues, divorce, death and teenage pregnancy. These problems can lead to complex issues and outcomes for grandparents and their grandchildren.
Grandparents mostly interact with the grandchildren for play dates and vacations, not on a day-to- day basis. Therefore, raising a second or even third generation can bring rewards, including the fulfillment of giving your grandkids a sense of security, developing better relationships and keeping the family together and out of the foster care system. Nevertheless, no matter how much you love your grandchildren, taking them in requires major adjustments for everyone involved.
