“Public health promotes and protects the health of people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play,” states the American Public Health Association. “While a doctor treats people who are sick, those of us working in public health try to prevent people from getting sick or injured in the first place.”

Meeker-McLeod-Sibley Community Health Services has programs that can assist families with parenting skills and help moms work to stay sober. Throughout Meeker, McLeod and Sibley counties there are programs such as Nurse Family Partnership, Family Home Visiting and Project Harmony that work with families.

Public Health continues to work on building relationships by doing program outreach with other providers that work directly with parents and children in our communities such as clinics, early childhood staff, Rule 25 assessors and the child protection team. More than 70 families are being served across the three counties through programs such as Maternal Child Health Visits, Family Home Visiting and Project Harmony — and referrals are on the rise.

Project Harmony works with women who are parenting at least one child age 10 or younger, or are pregnant and using substances. The clients work with a public health nurse, a licensed alcohol drug counselor and a recovery coach to help them move toward long-term recovery and sobriety.
